Sanofi-aventis has an extensive portfolio of prescription drugs, vaccines, generics and consumer healthcare products targeting a balanced mix of traditional markets and emerging countries¹.

Prescription medicines

In 2009, pharmaceutical sales increased by 3.7% to €25.823 million, of which 23.381 million for prescription medicines partly driven by the Group's major products in the diabetes, thrombosis and oncology.

Among these, Lantus® confirms its position as the leading brand of insulin on the world market with sales of €3,080 million in 2009, boosted by the success of the SoloSTAR® pen injector. Lovenox® remains the global leader of low-molecular weight heparins, growing by 8.8% with sales of €3,043 million in 2009. Despite competition from generics in Europe, Plavix® increased sales by 6.2% in 2009 to €6,782 million (world sales²). In oncology, Taxotere® grew by 6.1% in 2009 with sales of €2,177 million.

The Group’s other major prescription drugs are Aprovel®, Eloxatin®, Aprida® and Multaq®.

Human Vaccines

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of sanofi-aventis, is a global leader with the world’s broadest range of human vaccines. The major vaccines that performed best in 2009 include Polio/Pertussis/Hib vaccines such as Pentacel® and Pentaxim®, along with influenza vaccines against seasonal and pandemic influenza, with 2009 sales of €968 million and €1,062 million respectively. During the same period, Sanofi Pasteur strengthened its leadership in emerging markets by acquiring Shantha Biotechnics in India and launching ShanChol® and SHAN5™ to meet needs in these markets.

Generics

Boosted by the consolidation of Zentiva, Laboratorios Kendrick and Medley, the Generics business in 2009 almost tripled to deliver sales of €1,012 million. The new European generics platform is now operational.

Consumer Healthcare

In February 2010, sanofi-aventis successfully completed its takeover bid for Chattem, and became the 5th largest player in the global market. In 2009, eight international brands: Doliprane®, Essentiale®, No-Spa®, Maalox®, Enterogermina®, Magne B6®, Dorflex®, and Lactacyd® grew by 22.1% while the total sales amounted to €1,430 million.

Animal Health

Merial, a sanofi-aventis subsidiary, is a leading producer of animal health products with Frontline® and Heartgard®. Merial posted net sales of 2,554 million US dollars in 2009.
