Press Conference on the dangers of choking games, organized with the support of sanofi-aventis humanitarian sponsoring
The APEAS (French Association of the Parents of Children Injured by Strangulation) with the support of sanofi-aventis humanitarian sponsoring, organized a press conference in Paris on May 31, 2007. The purpose was to raise awareness about choking or strangulation games in the media and among those working with child. These games involve intentional strangulation, carried out either alone or with other children to cause pleasant sensations and a slight experience of hallucinations. This apparently harmless experience can have very serious effects, including irreversible after-effects and even death. The choking game, widely practiced in several countries yet is very hard to detect since it does not involve violent or suicidal behavior. It is simply a dangerous game that is practiced by children as young as five up to young adults of 20. Every year it causes over a hundred deaths. During this morning meeting there was a preview screening of “Ceci n’est pas un jeu / This is not a game” directed by Gilles Corre, the first documentary film on the choking game in France, the United States and Canada. The press conference ended with a round table discussion with:
During the Annual Shareholders Meeting in the afternoon, shareholders also learnt about the APEAS’ missions and spoke with its representatives. On the recommendations of the Shareholders’ Consultative Committee and as an act of respect of our Group’s commitment to solidarity, the traditional gift made during the Annual Shareholders Meeting was donated to developing a sponsoring program. In 2007, it was this APEAS prevention program that was chosen. The APEAS was created in 2002 by a former Group employee, and has been supported by sanofi-aventis sponsoring since it began.
