Sanofi-aventis is a global healthcare company engaged in the research, development, manufacture and marketing of healthcare products. Our business is diversified and includes pharmaceuticals comprising Rx (prescription) drugs, consumer healthcare business (over-the-counter / combined OTC and Rx drugs) and generics; vaccines and animal health.

Pharmaceuticals business

Sanofi-aventis' pharmaceuticals business focuses on six therapeutic areas: diabetes, oncology, thrombosis, cardiovascular diseases, central nervous system (CNS) and internal medicine.

• 2009 net sales of the pharmaceuticals business: €25,823 million, +3.7% versus 2008.

The Rx drugs activity counts 8 flagship products in 2009 : Lantus®, Lovenox®, Plavix®, Taxotere®, Aprovel®, Eloxatin®, Apidra®, Multaq®.

Sanofi-aventis also has a significant presence in consumer healthcare business, in various product categories.

• 2009 net sales of consumer healthcare: €1,430 million, +26.8% versus 2008.

In addition to Rx drugs and consumer healthcare, the pharmaceutical business comprises generics.

• 2009 net sales of generics: €1.012 million.
  The turnover of the generics activity approximately tripled compared to 2008, mainly reflecting the consolidation of Zentiva, Kendrick and Medley with organic growth.

Vaccines business

Sanofi Pasteur, the fully integrated vaccines business of sanofi-aventis, is the world leader in the vaccines industry offering the broadest range of vaccines in five areas: influenza, pediatric combinations and poliomyelitis vaccines, adult and adolescent booster vaccines, meningitis as well as travel, endemic and measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccines.

• 2009 net sales of the vaccines business: €3,483 million, +19.2% versus 2008.
• Non-consolidated 2009 sales of Sanofi Pasteur MSD (50/50 joint-venture with Merck): €1,132 million, -11% versus 2008.

Animal health

Merial, a subsidiary of sanofi-aventis, is one of the world’s leading animal health companies dedicated to the research, development, manufacture and delivery of innovative pharmaceuticals and vaccines used by veterinarians, farmers and pet owners.

• Non-consolidated 2009 sales of Merial: $2,554 million, +0.4% versus 2008.

Geographic presence

Sanofi-aventis has a commercial presence in approximately 100 countries, and our products are available in more than 170 countries. Our presence is well-balanced between traditional (Europe, North America and Japan) and emerging markets. Sanofi-aventis is the established leader in emerging markets, holding top positions in the main countries.
