Research and innovation

Sanofi-aventis research focuses on the development of new approaches, new targets, new pharmaceutical classes. For example, with the central nervous system, the objective is not just to identify new psychotropic drugs to treat depression, schizophrenia and anxiety, but also to develop neuroprotective agents. In other words to propose causal, not symptomatic, therapeutic solutions.

However, innovation in health is not limited to the discovery of new medications. It can also involve developing a new formulation of an existing drug to provide patients with a better quality of life (easier and less frequent administration, reduced side effects…). To ensure patients receive the most effective treatment, in the shortest possible time, several research strategies are pursued in parallel for each of the therapeutic areas. These can include :

  • new therapeutic indications
  • new formulations
  • molecular, physiopathological and exploratory approaches
  • biotechnology
  • genomics and proteomics

A determined ethical component
at all stages of research and
development :

  • close links are established with patient support groups to gain better understanding of the problems attendant to each condition,
  • ethics committees supervise research protocols,
  • independent expert committees ensure observance of ethical principles (information provided to patients, confidentiality of data, etc.) when clinical trials are set up
  • an independent committee to guarantee throughout the trial the possibility of modifying or interrupting a clinical study
