In Europe
At the European level, employee representatives on the sanofi-aventis European Works Council (40 members and 40 alternates, drawn from the 27 European Union member states) were re-elected in September 2009 for an additional four-year term, as were nine Committee officers. The Council met in April, June, July, October and November 2009 to give the employee representatives regular updates on initiatives related to the Group’s transformation program (R&D, Commercial Operations, Vaccines, Industrial Affairs and Support Functions). The five employee representatives on the sanofi-aventis Board of Directors also had their terms renewed at the European Works Council meeting that took place on October 1, 2009.
In Europe, negotiations took place in 2009 in line with the necessary reorganizations in a number of countries. This especially concerned Commercial Operations, in particular due to changes in government policies with regard to healthcare and the genericization of certain sanofi-aventis drugs.
Three management hubs (Nordic, Adriatic and Baltic) were also established within the scope of reorganization for the implementation of expert functions to be shared among these three regions.
Following the acquisition of Zentiva, the human resources policy in the Czech Republic was harmonized in line with Group HR policy.
With respect to other regions of the globe, a number of countries (Venezuela, South Africa, Argentina, Egypt, Hong-Kong, Morocco, etc.) conducted a social climate survey in 2009 that resulted in the implementation of action plans designed to respond to local challenges.
In France
In France, the employee representatives on the Group Works Council (25 permanent members and 25 substitutes), as well as the representatives appointed by the trade unions, had their terms renewed for an additional two years. The French Group Works Council met in June, July, November and December 2009. During these meetings, the Committee was updated on the Group’s activities and financial position, employment trends within the Group and initiatives associated with the transformation program launched by senior management in January 2009. A number of agreements applicable to all the Group’s French companies were entered into or amended in 2009.
In other countries
In most countries where the Group operates, formal employee representative bodies are regularly engaged in social dialogue practices ranging from information/consultation to negotiations that focus on topics that arise frequently, such as working conditions, compensation and employee benefits.
